Court orders construction and insurance firms to pay damages
An expatriate employee in Abu Dhabi won a case against two local construction and insurance companies after a court ordered them to pay him Dh700,000 damages for a serious injury caused when a steel door fell on him at work.

The worker had sought Dh300,000 during initial hearings at a Court of First Instance, before he demanded Dh1.6 million when an expert report presented to court blamed the contracting firm for not taking sufficient safety measures at the construction site.

The judge ordered the two companies to pay Dh600,000 damages to the worker after a medical report he was no longer able to work.

After appeals hearings requested by both the worker and the two firms, the judge increased the damages to Dh700,000, prompting both sides to appeal with the Court of Cassation, which upheld that sentence.

“The court found that the compensation sum is suitable for the worker who became unable to work and support himself.
